Animation Research

The Brothers Quay
Been a big fan of these guys for awhile. The aesthetic and imagery that they use is gorgeous, and the dark, macabre, quality of it is reminiscient of my own work, hence the influence. I honestly recommend just watching everything that they've done, but this short, 'Street of Crocodiles' is one of my favorites. They work primarily with stop-motion, but have also used live action and have completed a couple of feature length films as well. And NO, these guys did not direct the 'Tool' videos.

William Kentridge
I first learned about Kentridge my first time through college, about 10 years ago. Kentridge is a South African artist known for his animations and their unique style. While his work has evolved and progressed over the years, what has always been most interesting to me are his charcoal drawing animations. The animations are created by drawing an image on a large sheet of paper, photographing the image, then erasing an redrawing the image on the same sheet of paper. Because of this methodology, the animations show the progress of the work, as the previous images are still slightly apparent, creating a ghostly, tracer effect. Seeing his work made me realize that animation doesnt necessarily have to be crisp, clean, images, but can also have their own life and spirit.
