Unfortunately I couldnt find a whole lot of information about this guy, as he was taken from us prematurely because of a brain tumor. He apparently worked on some pretty intense projects though, such as 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' and 'James and the Giant Peach,' both great films. This is his Oscar winning short, 'The Sandman'
The inspiration for most of the artists I've posted, Jan Švankmajer is a Czech Surrealist artist and a filmmaker. One of the most celebrated and influential animators of all time, it would be a crime not to consider his work during this project.
Adam Jones
I figured I might as well throw Jones in here too. The guitarist for the band 'Tool' and one of the artists credited for their videos, Jones is a talented fellow whose character models and animations, while sometimes considered derivitive for their similarity to the Quays, is still quite impressive and also in line with the aesthetic I intend to employ for my own animations. This is the video for 'Sober' by his band 'Tool'
Alexandre Alexeieff
An early Russian animator, he and his wife invented the 'pinscreen,' a device that allowed the creation of images by moving hundreds of thousands of pins placed through a board and strategically lighting them. The method is not only cumbersome and time-consuming, but because the images are created only by the placement of the pins, there is no way to go back to a previous image without rearraning the entire pinscreen. Insane. Here is a short film Alexeieff created using this painstaking technique, 'La nariz'
